NFS Community-Podcast #3 Wednesday, 21.10.2009
The third Need for Speed Community-Podcast was released on NeedforSpeed.com, where Andrew and Drew talk about NFS breaking the » 100 million units barrier and the currently running » Youtube Challenge and a Formula D event.

At the end they talked about the upcoming patch for Need for Speed Shift, which is currently in the works by the Slightly Mad Studios. A vague estimate would be that the patch could be available in the mid of November, but don't take this for granted. Among some bugfixes (like the framerate issues on PS3) the patch will feature an improvement for the onlinemode: instead of 8 players it will be possible that up to 12 players can race against each other.

100 million copies of Need for Speed! Wednesday, 21.10.2009
Electronic ArtsNeed for Speed is one of the most successful game franchises worldwide. EA announced today that from the first title in 1994 the series has surpassed 100 million units sold life to date. The latest title, Need for Speed Shift pushes the franchise over the 100M mark, making it the best-selling racing brand in the gaming world. With Need for Speed EA didn't focus on consistency, rather than on innovation. Just with the latest NFS Shift the series makes a turn to realistic racing, while in previous titles the NFS games were known for innovations like Autosculpt, street racing, customizations, tuning, vinyls and much more.

100 Mio Copies

Since the start of Need for Speed in the year 1994 15 blockbuster titles were launched on more than 14 platforms. Here are some more intersting facts:

  • Released in 22 languages in over 60 countries
  • Players have raced over 279 billion miles of roads & race tracks
  • Generated over 17 trillion user-generated vehicle customizations
  • Featured actors, models & musicians including: Brooke Burke (Wild On), Christina Milian (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past), Emmanuelle Vaugier (Two and a Half Men), Josie Maran (Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and actress), Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible III), Kanye West, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Prodigy

  • If Need for Speed boxes were laid out end-to-end, it would span 173,609 football fields
  • 100M units represents nearly every household in the United States and is 3x the population of Canada
