Online Service Shutdown of Carbon and ProStreet for PSP |
Wednesday, 17.02.2010 |
Need for Speed is still being played over the internet. As long as enough players are online, EA keeps the multiplayer servers up and running, but for Need for Speed Carbon and Need for Speed ProStreet on Playstation Portable it'll come to an end: the shutdown for the online services of both games on PSP is scheduled for March 16th, 2010.
Another racing game, Burnout 3: Takedown, is going down too: on April 15th 2010 the online services for Playstation 2 and Xbox will be shut down.
For more information regarding the shutdowns, read this statement from EA:
As background information, the games scheduled for shutdown in March and April 2010 represent less than 0.3% of all peak online players across all EA titles. Despite some people's perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99.7% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The EA development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.

Releasedates of NFS World & other NFS titles |
Tuesday, 09.02.2010 |
Electronic Arts published its third quarter fiscal year 2010 results - apart from financial details, this report also unveils several release dates of upcoming titles.
The interesting thing is, that three new Need for Speed games seem to hit the stores within the 1-2 years:
- Need for Speed World (PC): April-June 2010
- Need for Speed TBA (PC, Console, Handheld): October-December 2010
- Need for Speed TBA (PC, Console): January-March 2011
NFS World is obviously the Online Racer, whose Betaphase will start soon. One of the other two titles might be the Need for Speed developed by Criterion Games? (At least according to several rumours...)
But the third one? According to rumours in 2009 maybe EA Black Box is also working on a new NFS title - could that be true? We will see...

NFS Shift: Mod for better Graphics |
Monday, 08.02.2010 |
Need for Speed Shift already has a high graphic quality, but if you want to challenge your performance-beast (also called PC), you might be interested in this mod from BeetleatWar1977: More details, high-resolution textures and full-range HDR-rendering:
Changes by the mod:
- modified HDR: removed the limitations originating from consoles (initially only the TV dynamic range 16-235 was used)
- LOD - mostly disabled
- sight distance increased
- SSAO works with twice the sample count
- motionblur: modified mode when settings are "high" (higher sample count and changed dispersion)
- re-activated several hidden features in shader programs (envmapping and parralax effect)
- modified the generation of shadows (additional shadows at specific objects)
- SSAO extended - is now used for additional objects (the game doesn't use fullscreen SSAO)
- Increased particle effects count and the connected visibility range
- Modified filteroptions of shaders
You can download the mod here, or at PC Games Hardware (German):

NFS Shift: Ferrari-DLC for Xbox360? |
Saturday, 06.02.2010 |
According to several rumours, a new Ferrari Add-On is being released this month for Need for Speed Shift on Xbox Live! The 349th issue of the Major Nelson Podcast features an interview with Andy Tudor, who talks about the upcoming Ferrari-DLC:
As it seems the DLC will contain 10 new Ferraris, as well as new achievements and new events in career mode. Of course the Ferraris will be playable online. The cars were hand-picked by the team - it's not known yet, which ones, but these four were announced in the interview:
- Ferrari F430
- Ferrari FXX
- Ferrari California
- Ferrari F50 GT
Ferraris in Need for Speed would be quite a novelty, since it's a brand which was desperately missed in the latest NFS games.
Stay tuned for more..
