Electronic ArtsNeed for Speed is one of the most successful game franchises worldwide. EA announced today that from the first title in 1994 the series has surpassed 100 million units sold life to date. The latest title, Need for Speed Shift pushes the franchise over the 100M mark, making it the best-selling racing brand in the gaming world. With Need for Speed EA didn't focus on consistency, rather than on innovation. Just with the latest NFS Shift the series makes a turn to realistic racing, while in previous titles the NFS games were known for innovations like Autosculpt, street racing, customizations, tuning, vinyls and much more.

Since the start of Need for Speed in the year 1994 15 blockbuster titles were launched on more than 14 platforms. Here are some more intersting facts:

  • Released in 22 languages in over 60 countries
  • Players have raced over 279 billion miles of roads & race tracks
  • Generated over 17 trillion user-generated vehicle customizations
  • Featured actors, models & musicians including: Brooke Burke (Wild On), Christina Milian (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past), Emmanuelle Vaugier (Two and a Half Men), Josie Maran (Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and actress), Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible III), Kanye West, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Prodigy
  • Debuted exclusive remix from Snoop Dogg of The Door’s classic song Riders on the Storm
  • Sold more games than all new passenger cars sales in the U.S since 1994
  • If Need for Speed boxes were laid out end-to-end, it would span 173,609 football fields
  • 100M units represents nearly every household in the United States and is 3x the population of Canada



This just leaves us to hope that the NFS series is being conintued and deliver exciting entertainment also in the future. After NFS Shift the next upcoming Need for Speed title is Need for Speed Nitro for Nintendo Wii and DS, coming on November 3rd in North America and November 6th in Europe. In Taiwan Need for Speed World Online will begin the beta process this winter and will open to all players around the world in fall 2010. With World Online EA follows the free to play business model, which allows players to play the game for free and only pay for in-game items, they want to buy.

Great info I have been playing NFS from the first one to the last one, I have them all and I have completed them all at least 3 times, with NFS8 (Underground 2) holding the record at 32 times. Keep up the good work EA, I love your games.

'Gratz NFS, 'gratz EA, great job, keep it up. By the way, they said there's another action title coming, just wondering when they're going to officially announce it. (They mentioned it when World Online, Nitro and Shift were announced.)
