NFS C: Online Features |
Saturday, 30.09.2006 |
Electronic Arts finally published some infos about the onlinemode of Need for Speed Carbon over the onlinemagazine IGN:
Can you give us a quick synopsis of what direction you are taking online features this year? What is the biggest difference between this year and last year?
Carbon's online feature set is much broader and deeper than anything we've done before on a Need for Speed game. For Most Wanted last year we had 3 online multiplayer modes. This year we've added to that and included a great deal more .
In or out of the main career all of our race modes can be played online. There are 4 game modes that you can compete in online multiplayer racing: Circuit, Sprint, Speedtrap and Canyon Duel. Those races that aren't multiplayer will track your best times and scores on the Online Leaderboards.
We are tracking and displaying your statistics for every race, track, game mode and free roam event you participate in during the game. We've added Online Co-operative Challenge Series events where you can race with up to 3 friends in any of 4 challenges and complete the Challenge together.
What can you tell us about the new race modes?
We also have two, very cool, online exclusive multiplayer modes that I can't wait to talk about. But, we'll have to save those for next time.
How are you taking advantage of leader boards this year?
Every track and race mode has its own leaderboard that reflects both multiplayer and single player results. If you are connected to online while playing, your best results are being recorded to the boards. Better yet, we filter the results to show you how you rank against all of your friends on each board.
What is Shadow Mode?
We've built Need for Speed's first Shadow mode. You can record your own shadow on any ranked track and if you play online, you can download the current leader's Shadow for a specific track and race mode. If you can do better, your Shadow takes over the top spot for others to try to beat.
We heard there was a photo mode? What is that?
We have developed a Photo Mode this year. You can take a photo of your car in either the pause menu of a solo race, or the front end and upload it to NeedforSpeed.com for you and your friends to share. Each photo includes detailed data on your car including your modifications, visual upgrades and car statistics
What are virus achievements?
There are four special unlocks you can earn this year by playing others online. Three of the unlocks are earned by playing an "infected" player in specific multiplayer modes. Once you've played together, you are now infected, gain the unlock, and can infect others by playing with them in that mode. If you can contract all three viruses you'll earn an additional piece of content for the achievement.

NFS C: Gamespot Hands-On |
Thursday, 28.09.2006 |
The onlinemagazine Gamespot was at the X06 event and played Need for Speed Carbon on the Xbox360. Certainly they wrote a Hands-On article and also published a video of the game.
Excerpt:
After claiming victory in the single race, it was time to take on the career mode. As in the previous game, Carbon's career mode is made up of a slew of different challenges which dot the map along a number of different sections of town. You can choose to enter these challenges either by accessing them on your map or, also like Most Wanted, exploring the world in free roam mode and running into them while you drive around. Of the various challenges we saw noted on the map, some were familiar standbys, such as checkpoint, circuit, sprint, speedtrap, and boss race, and some were new, including drift challenges and something called "race wars." No, this isn't an Ice-T song, it's a new challenge mode found in Carbon which basically pits you against a rival crew. Presumably, this is one area in the game where the Carbon's team-oriented approach comes in to play, as you recruit a team of talented wingmen to help you take over territory from rival street racers. After we took the crown in the race war we ran, we were treated to a nice in-game cut scene, where a female rival drove up to us and advised us to, "go back where we came from." The bad news is that the cut scene drops the cheesy-yet-compelling visual style and hammy acting from Most Wanted. We miss Josie Maran already.
