Rumour: Back to the roots with Criterion Games' new NFS? Monday, 06.07.2009
As previously » reported is Criterion Games (the developers of the Burnout series) working on a new Need for Speed title. At the moment there isn't much information about this project, but what Alex Ward, Creative Director at Criterion Games writes in his » Twitter Channel sounds quite interesting:

"Red lining it all the way and making it pay" - a return to the original 3DO version of The Need for Speed.

Back to the roots, back to the original The Need for Speed on the 3DO? Sounds interesting...

There is no name or releasedate known yet - first we get to play Need for Speed Shift, Nitro and World Online in fall 2009.

Criterion Games: New Need for Speed in the works Thursday, 11.06.2009
Electronic ArtsThe rumors were flying thick and fast, and finally it is a fact: Electronic Arts' COO John Pleasants confirmed that a new Need for Speed title is currently under development at Criterion Games.

"We've taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need For Speed franchise. So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion."

EA's CEO John Riccitiello affirmed that there won't be any mix-up of both the NFS and the Burnout franchise:

"I don't think you can fold Burnout into Need for Speed, because a lot of people like Burnout. We don't have a plan right now for a separate major launch on Burnout, because the team doing it is working on a revolutionary take on Need for Speed."

"Revolutionary" take? Sadly they gave no explanation for that. Neither name nor release date for the new title were mentioned.

Criterion Games developing next NFS for 2010? Friday, 15.05.2009
While this year's NFS games are already in development a new rumour popped up: According to Primotechnology John Riccitiello announced in an internal presentation that Criterion Games, the developers of the successful Burnout series is working on a new Need for Speed title for 2010.

After the » restructuring of EA Black Box Criterion Games was already in discussion, but this thought was dropped once the new NFS games (Need for Speed Shift, Nitro and World Online) were announced.

It's not known yet, how much we can trust this rumour, but already the last time it showed, that Criterion Games would be a favored developer of a new NFS. But this raises the question, what will happen to Burnout...

Once we have more information about that topic, you'll get to know here.

Info: EA restructuring, Black Box is moving Friday, 19.12.2008
Electronic ArtsThe publisher Electronic Arts is currently undergoing some restructuring and announced today redundancies of 10% (~1,000 people) of its work force (which represents a four percent increase from the six percent reduction EA announced in October).

Additionally at least nine studio and publishing locations are going to be closed or consolidated, among them EA Black Box, the developers of the Need for Speed series since Hot Pursuit 2. The development team will move to the nearby EA studio location in Burnaby, British Columbia.

So the rumours of shutting down the NFS series last week (see » here and » here) are partly true, but it doesn't seem like EA is cutting NFS. It's not sure however, who will continue the series: the Black Box team, maybe Criterion Games (the makers of Burnout) or a fusioned team...

The layoffs and restructuring plan will result in annual cost savings of approximately $120 million and restructuring charges of approximately $55-65 million over the next several quarters.

Rumour: Update regarding possible end NFS Monday, 15.12.2008
Electronic ArtsWith the last episode of Electric Playground a » rumour is going on, that EA is cutting the Need for Speed series. According to the onlinemagazine Joystiq this might not be entirely true. Instead of shutting down NFS, EA wants to close the EA Black Box Studios in Vancouver, which developed the latest NFS games, and move the development team to the larger studios in Burnaby.

Joystiq's source says, that the next NFS game in the series will be developed by Criterion, the developers of the Burnout series and most likely use their own engine. The three teams from EA Black Box currently developing NFS will consolidate into one drastically downsized team, leading into less NFS releases with more continuity.

There is no official confirmation from EA yet, but we might can expect more information this week.
